When a former client faced scrutiny from BBC News over a serious issue affecting residents at a residential development, ProperPR was brought in to provide urgent crisis communications support.
The situation was understandably sensitive. Residents had been left without a full gas supply for a prolonged period, affecting access to heating and hot water. The experiences reported, particularly those of a resident who had spent much of her pregnancy without these essential services, needed to be treated with care and respect.
Our role was not to minimise the impact on residents, but to help the organisation communicate openly, accurately and constructively at a difficult moment.
Working within a very short timeframe, we helped the client to:
- Establish the facts and clarify the sequence of events
- Understand and respond to the journalist’s questions
- Prepare a clear, empathetic and accountable statement
- Explain the complexities contributing to the delay without appearing defensive
- Set out the practical support being provided to residents
- Communicate the action being taken to achieve a resolution
By responding quickly and constructively, we ensured the resulting coverage included important context alongside residents’ experiences and represented the organisation’s position fairly. This significantly mitigated the potential negative media and reputational impact for our client, while allowing the seriousness of the residents’ concerns to remain properly acknowledged. This was the central objective of our crisis communications brief, and it was achieved.
The case demonstrates the value of preparation and specialist communications advice when a property-related issue becomes public. Although a strong crisis response cannot undo the underlying problem, it can prevent confusion, correct inaccuracies and significantly reduce the potential reputational fallout. In this instance, timely and carefully judged media engagement helped achieve a considerably more balanced outcome for our client.
