The number of house buyers getting a mortgage has climbed to its highest level in over a year.

A total of 42,989 mortgages were approved in April, said banking trade body UK Finance, up 11.5 per cent on a year earlier. Lending rose by around £1.8 billion.

It is the most approvals since February 2017, following a slowdown as buyers got cold feet amid turmoil over Brexit.

Shepherd Ncube, of estate agent Springbok Properties, said: ‘The numbers are a welcome relief from the negativity and uncertainty that many market commentators have portrayed since the early days of Brexit.’
